Reporting an Incident:

South West Lakes Trust manages a portfolio of nearly 50 lakes and other natural resources so it is not always possible for our wardens to be on the scene when issues occur. The very remote and rural nature of our estate, the thing that makes them so special, also means that modern mobile communications don’t always cover the areas we would like them to. This makes getting an immediate response to ongoing incidents very challenging.

Please use this form to report any incidents of poaching, illegal fishing or any other form of antisocial behaviour to the management team so that we are able to take appropriate action.

July saw the second South West Lakes Trust Mainline pairs competition of the year at Upper Tamar lake. Once again the weather was kind and sunny.  This time 18 pairs took part in the competition with 28 pegs available, so anglers had plenty of space to choose from. Most anglers walked the lake to see if any fish were showing in any particular area and they were all very serious and not letting on where fish were showing.

The anglers had completed their bio security checks and dipped their nets and equipment. 11am arrived and time for the draw. 8 pairs favoured the Devon bank and 10 pairs the Cornwall side. The draw was completed and each pair collected their Mainline goody bags; transport was provided to get all anglers safely to their pegs.

At 2pm the horn sounded for the start of the competition, it was not long before the marshals had their first call, Dave Bellew peg 12 catching a cracking 22Ib 6oz Mirror, within five minutes Dan Hole & Jack Chillingworth peg 14 recorded their first fish, 18Ib 15oz Mirror. Things went quiet until around 7pm when peg 14 recorded their second fish, followed shortly by peg 12, Dave Bellew recording his second. Former winner Nigel Woods, peg 10, recorded his first fish of the day. The Devon bank seemed to be dominating the competition with pegs 10,12, 14, producing the fish.

Saturday morning arrived and fish were recorded on the Cornwall bank, but still pegs 10, 12, 14 were dominating the leader board. As Saturday evening arrived there were 6 pegs recording 3 fish. During Saturday evening 11 fish were recorded and it was all to play for. Liam & Aaron Jones on peg 27 with 2 fish, Craig Hunt & George West peg 21 and Simon Fower & Stuart Morrish, peg 22, all with 2 fish and all into double figures.  The big question was with 6 pegs all within pounds of each other, who were going to claim the top prize of £2000.

Sunday morning arrived with peg 14, Dan & Jack, top of the leader board followed closely by Dave Bellew, peg 12, and Nigel Woods peg 10, one big fish would change the leader.

Aaron & Liam Jones, peg 27, were unlucky losing 2 fish in the last hour. With 10 minutes to go, Dan & Jack, peg 14, on 58Ib 1oz and Dave Bellew, peg 12, on 48Ib 6oz. The ever consistent Nigel Woods, peg 10, landed a 23Ib 14oz fish putting him into second place and only 15ozs behind the leader.  The horn sounded at 11am to end the competition. Top weights were recorded by 8 pegs making it an exciting competition. Out of the 18 pegs drawn only 2 pegs did not record any fish. Over 50 fish were recorded, all in all, a very close and exciting contest.

Congratulations to Dan & Jack, peg 14, 58Ib 1oz, Nigel, Peg 10, 57Ib 2oz’s Dave, Peg 12 48Ib 6oz’s and also Craig & George, peg, 21, 46Ib 0oz’s Simon & Stuart, peg 22, 42Ib 2oz’s for making it a close fought competition, with only a few pounds separating 3rd to 5th place.

The format of the prizes this year were changed, to give anglers more chances to win prizes. First, second, and third prizes remained the same.

A big thank you to all that took part, thank you John Kneebone and Mainline Baits for sponsoring the event.

A massive thank you to our volunteer marshals who gave up their time to help run this event. Gary, Laura, Bob, Ken and Mark, you made my running the event easy. We could not run the competition without your help. - Mervyn
